In reference to pattern, Shiraz pieces generally feature a central medallion or a series of two or three medallions down the center of the rug. Furthermore, the field will generally feature small, geometric animal motifs with human figures. Shiraz rugs and carpets are of good quality. Shiraz rugs and carpets come in different sizes, but the majority of them range with mid-sized dimensions from 4x6 to 8x10 feet. It is very hard to find a larger size (10x18 feet). The dominant colors in a Shiraz rug are strong blues, blacks, reds, and browns. These rugs and carpets usually are thick and do not have a very tight pile. The warps of the foundation are mostly wool; the wefts are either cotton or wool. Weavers in Shiraz use Persian and Turkish knots.
