QAZVIN (GHAZVIN) is located in a vast plain 144 km (90 Miles) west of Tehran. The city was founded in the time of Sassanide Shapour . It was gradually developed as the main nucleus of Qazvin (Ghazvin). After the invasion of Iran by Arabs (the Islamic conquests), this city was surrounded by one of the famous Arab commanders named Bera-ebn Azeb in the year 24 AH (644 CE). During the Islamic Era, Qazvin (Ghazvin) became one of the Arab military bases. In the Omavi Caliphate, Jameh Mosque-one of the reputable mosques of the city until Haroon-al-Rashid's reign-was constructed. Some places of interest in Qazvi are: • City Museum • Kolah Farangi • Shazdeh Hossain Tomb • Evan Lake • Chehel Sotoon Palace Qazvin (Ghazvin) rugs and carpets usually have curvilinear patterns. Some tribal patterns are found in pieces made in surrounding villages and are sold as Qazvin (Ghazvin). Today, Qazvin (Ghazvin) does not produce rugs. The last year of production was around 1930-1935. Qazvin (Ghazvin) rugs and carpets have visages similar to the Kashsan and Bijar. The quality of Qazvin (Ghazvin) rugs and carpets varies. Older ones (before 1930) are very good, but some of the later are not made as well. These rugs and carpets come in different sizes, but the majority of them are mid-sized ranging from 4x6 to 8x10 feet. Dark reds and bold blues are the predominant colors, with ivories forming a beautiful contrast. Qazvin (Ghazvin) rugs and carpets are made of a soft wool and have a thin, tight pile. The warps of the foundation are mostly cotton; the wefts can be either cotton or wool. Weavers in Qazvin (Ghazvin) use both Persian and Turkish knots. Old Qazvin (Ghazvin) rugs and carpets are very valuable due to their rarity.
