3.3x4.10 Rudbar

History of Origin

ROUDBAR (RUDBAR, ROODBAR), around 250 km(155 Miles) northwest of Tehran, is in a unique geographical position. The huge Sephid Rood (White River) dam is located just beside the city. Roudbar is also famous for its constant strong winds, so there are many windmills that generate electricity. Olives are another significant product of this city, which is covered with olive trees and gardens. Roudbar is located on a geological fault, and in 1995 a massive earthquake destroyed the entire city. Roudbar has many historical
sites. Just fourteen kilometers east of the town on the road from Tehran to Rashat, there is a little coffee shop called "Kalati." Across the river from this coffee shop, on the southern bank of Sephid Rood (White River) lies the village of Lot, which serves as a river port for the villages located in the valley of Gohar Rud. Due to its natural advantages, scenic beauty, mildness of the climate, and fertility of the soil, from ancient times this area has served as the home of rulers and ruling classes whose lands extended over vast areas of northern Iran. Consequently, there are numerous large and small archaeological mounds in this valley
where the remains of forgotten ancient cultures are buried. The most important among them are:
• Marlik
• Zeynab Bejar
• Pileh Qal'eh
• Jazim Kool
When it comes to weaving, the nomadic Roudbars, have a very well developed talent for this for over 3000 years. In reference to physical characteristics, Roudbar rugs and carpets have curvilinear patterns, a particularly repeating all-over pattern sometimes setting off a central medallion. Sometimes the famous Herati(fish) design is used. You can also find ones with birds in a tree or with small animals. The quality of these rugs and carpets varies. Roudbar pieces normally come in runner sizes but some are small to medium in size. Dark reds and bold blues are the predominant colors, with ivories forming a beautiful contrast. There are other colors found in newer carpets such as soft greens, blues, and browns. Roudbar's are made of a soft wool and have a thin, tight pile. The warps of the foundation are mostly cotton; the single weft is made of either cotton or wool. Weavers in Roudbar use both Persian and Turkish knots. Roudbar rugs and runners are of extremely durable quality and add much character to one's home with inspiring colors and designs.
